Ashes + Embers + Emotional Eating

Provisions for Peaking..?

by Eleanor Baker

Hello Reader,

You are likely well aware of the fires that have ripped through Southern California. Homes—and the clutter of their contents—have turned to ash overnight.

Clutching a grab bag, the displaced set off into the world with the most valuable things they own: their health and their community. Times like these shed light on what it means to be human and what is truly essential to thrive.

Taking care of ourselves also means taking good care of our environment and our community. We are all connected in more ways than we know.

When people feel stressed, or no longer in control, they will seek tools to cope. Food being easily accessible is commonly used to quell the upwelling of emotions. While important to keep us alive and well, I do encourage the practice of mindfulness and slowing down if you find you are using it to cope emotionally.

Being mindful can be as simple as slowing down and being aware of abnormal eating habits that pop up during trying times. If you notice this happening, try the STOP method.

Slow down

Take a breath

Observe what is going on and how you are feeling

Proceed mindfully and with intention

When you slow down and take that breathe, you are create a moment of pause to identify how you are feeling and what your body really needs in the moment. Maybe you truly are hungry and need a meal or snack - honor that! Maybe to help you feel better you need a walk, to make a cup of tea, talk to a positive friend, sit in a hot bath to decompress. It is helpful to have many tools in your tool kit to take good care of yourself effectively.

self care = self love

Many of us are trying to show up as our best self in life, sport, career, or family. Having the space in your life to recognize when your ship is getting off course and a variety of tools in your tool kit to adjust your sails is important to keep things sailing smoothly.

We are born to adapt. My heart goes out to all that has happened in LA and I do hope that so many good things will come of this misfortune for those impacted.

Have you tried the STOP method?

A time to honor the harvest

Provisions for Peaking by Eleanor Baker, MS, RD, CSSD Autumn Harvest from my friend's farm Howdy Reader, I walked through my friends large fruit and vegetable garden the other day and realized that in just a few weeks, so much had changed. Where once the passion fruit, fig and stone fruit trees were full, now pomegranates and apples have filled in where the others have gone dormant. The soft juicy flesh of summer bears way to the firmer hardier offerings of autumn. How has the focus and...

Provisions for Peaking by Eleanor Baker, MS, RD, CSSD How fascinating it is to be in the aid station and see how athletes from all over the world fuel for a very verty 100K (~60 mile) trail running race.🍱 Even between athletes from the same country their approach to fueling the race can be exceptionally different. From showing up with a bag of what one thinks will be enough for the run to having their nutrition fully dialed down to the gram.📈 Much like training, fueling strategies can...
